Unit 20 Map and Alaska Hunting Regulations

New for 2013, In GMU 20 B & C we have new and longer hunting seasons for both residents and non-residents moose hunters.

In Game Management Unit 20, Alaska Private Guide Service has 2 areas for non-resident moose hunting. The benefits of hunting GMU 20 B&C are prices are less because the logistics are cheaper and there is no minimum trophy size in some areas while other have a 50" minimum antler spread requirement. We have longer moose seasons opening Sept.1st and ending Sept. 20 (hunt longer into the rut!) for non-residents. No special permits or drawings are required in either of these areas. Louis G. Albrant, Registered Guide # 963, will be working for Alaska Private Guide Service and will be the contracting guide for the fall moose, grizzly and black bear hunts.

Game Management Unit (GMU) 20 B & C is located to the West and North of Fairbanks and North of Denali Park along several interior rivers. See maps of the area. The many ponds, sloughs, and swamps off the main rivers make this area ideal habitat for moose and black bears with some areas for grizzly and wolves also inhabit the area. Alaska Private Guide Service offers guided, outfitted and unguided and transported hunts. We have hunted spring black bear in these areas for 20+ years. Recent changes by the Board of Game convinced us to begin adding fall moose hunt and a spring grizzly hunt in these units. Registered Guide Louis G. Albrant # 963 has worked with me/APGS for many years in both unit 17 and 20. Some of my best guides will be helping Lou and they have experience in this area black bear hunting and experience hunting moose and brown bear in unit 17. All of them have been with me for over 10 years. Plus we bought a plane for Lucky Lou to fly around and survey the game. So this could wind up being a more mobile spike camp hunting year since Lou will be able to survey hundreds of miles of creeks and rivers.

The large areas we hunt vary greatly so we have multiple access methods including jet and prop boats, 4 wheeler, 8 wheeler, track rig, float plane and highway vehicle. Any area may use more than one method of transportation..

Along the river we typically use a boat to get from camp to where we hunt but you may hunt right from camp. Some areas have places where you can spot for moose but in many places we will call for moose. We rarely moose hunt or shoot moose from the boat on a main river but we may use a canoe or raft to access a back channel, pond or slough and sneak up on a feeding bull. At the beginning of the season, we hunt in the mornings and evenings, but as the season progresses and the moose go into rut and begin to travel we will hunt most of the day. If we are getting answers not close to camp; or Lou finds something worth pursuing, we will use a spike camp to overnight. Fishing: We will not be providing guided fishing. You are welcome to try on your own.

Guided moose hunts. These are usually 1 guide for 1 or 2 hunters. They last 7-10 days. We supply all of the camp, food, boats, gas, etc. Pretty much all you need is your clothes, weapon and game bags.

Outfitted and unguided moose hunts. You hunt unguided on these hunts and we provide various levels of gear and equipment depending on where you are and what you need. We will take you into the field and bring you back.

Transported only hunts. You hunt on your own using all your gear. We provide no gear or equipment in the field. Basically we just take you in and drop you off where you tell us you want to go. You can pre-arrange a camp move for additional costs. We can not provide any services in the field.

Travel

Most hunters should plan to arrive into Fairbanks the day before departing for camp. Many of the return flights (Fairbanks back home) will depart late at night. So it is possible to get out of the field and get on a plane the same day. If you are having meat or trophies processed or shipped or bears and wolves sealed you probably want to spend an extra day in town to handle those affairs. The average round trip plane fair from the East Coast to Fairbanks is approximately $800. If you are getting a hotel they range from $70-$200/ night. Some have airport pick up and some do not. Hard gun cases and travel clothes will be left in the hotel storage room, usually for free. You will not be allowed to take a hard gun or bow case on the float plane and we do not need them on the boat or 4 wheeler trailer either. So bring a soft case.

Trophy / Meat Shipment

Fairbanks has FedX and UPS, with both located by the airport. Check with your airlines and see if you can ship antlers/capes and how they should be packaged. Antlers will be much cheaper to ship if you split the skull plate before shipping. Capes should be dried or frozen and shipped in a wetlock box/fish box. FedX and UPS require antlers be boxed. Shipments should be there well before noon. Any and all boxes leaving the State and containing any part of a game animal need to be marked on the outside with the quantity and contents.

Fairbanks has 2 meat processors who can cut up, process and ship your meat. Fairbanks also has taxidermist and a hide tannery that you may want to use.

All bears and wolves must be sealed at Fish and Game during the week (Monday-Friday) between 8 am and 5 pm. It is free to seal bears and wolves. Alaska Private Guide Service can assist if necessary for a charge of $75. The area F&WP (game wardens) can seal them after hours and on weekends.

You will receive a list of all of the above and how to contact them to discuss their services and fees. You must/should decide what you want to take home, what you want processed and who you want to ship it with before you leave home. Calling with the satellite phone from camp is not an option. -- top
